World of Warcraft Jewelcrafting Guide

Jewelcrafting is not our favorite profession at Dominate Your Server, but it can make a healthy profit at the higher levels. Gems are so hard to come by that this will be a difficult and expensive profession to level. You’re almost going to have to combine this with mining or you’ll spend a lot more on this profession than it will ever be worth. But if you simply must train this sucker all the way to 375 - here’s how to do it as fast (and with as little impact on your gold) as possible.
Because you will not always get a skill point for every one of these you make, we’ve given you the estimated number of mats needed in the bullet points.
1 - 30: Delicate Copper Wire x 30. (Mats required: 2 Copper Bar)
- 60 Copper bars

151 - 195: Mithril Filigree x 70. (Mats required: 2 Mithril Bar)
- 140 Mithril Bars
(you’ll hit 195 prior to making all 70, but you’ll need all 70 for the next step)
196 - 215: Engraved Truesilver Ring x 35. (Mats required: 1 Truesilver Bar, 2 Mithril Filligree)
- 35 Truesilver Bars
- 70 Mithril Filigree
216 - 225: Aquamarine Signet x 10. (Mats required: 3 Aquamarine, 4 Flask of Mojo)
- 30 Aquamarine

- 20 Azerothian Diamonds

- 20 Huge Emeralds
- 10 Thorium Settings
- 10 Thorium Bars
Past 300 it gets a lot more complicated to recommend a particular recipe since there are so many different gems you can cut. So what we are going to do is give you a list of possibilities for each range and you can make them according to the gems you are mining. Unless otherwise given, the mats for all cut gems are 1 of the gem type.
301 - 305: Cut Gems x 10 - 15.

Alternately from 365 - 375, if you are running Karazhan, you will find plenty of Alchemist Transmuting Diamonds. You can use this method to finish up, but you will have to be raiding quite a lot.
There are a lot more Jewelcrafting recipes, but they are very hard to find. Check out Thottbot’s Jewelcrafting page for a complete list, and then go Dominate!

I have a 70 mage and she is a jewelcrafter; I love making the jewels and things…It didn’t seem to be so expensive as I sold a lot of stuff at the AH and she is also a miner. I have an alt who is also a miner which helped in getting all the ore and gems..The mage is at 374 skill lvl now and doing great. Thnx for the info. love your site
I have a 64 warrior that spends alot of time with JC skill of 364 just prospecting, I average about 400g a day buying ore from the AH and reselling the gems. I never pay over 10g a stck for fel iron ore and never over 20g a stck for adamantite ore. Have mining and prospecting the gems out takes time but well worth it. Normally i will by 8-15 stacks of adamantitie and will usually get 8-10 large gems and near stacks of the the smaller ones.
Any alternative to silver? It’s harder to come by than adamantite usually.
Great point, Crazyratt! I’ll try that out on my jewelcrafting toon and see if we can add that to our gold making tips.

Im tempted to get JC just for that prospecting money making. However im on a dieing server with low pop (just under 4000 auctions when its scanned) so im not sure about the worth of it.
At the moment im buying primal air/mana and transmuting them into fire on about 5 different chars with high lvl alch due to the easy lvling, do you think having a char with JC would be a better money maker than a alch?
well, I personally think that if JC is wat u wanna do, mining or enchting is an absolute must. Only do enchating if its high enough that the enchants are more expensive than the mats. I u dont fall under that catigory, go mining and get ur own mats. Sell wat u dont need and buy way u cant mine
here are some of the inherent problems that typically come up on most servers when it comes to making money from JC:
1. Typically, you can make more from the ore or smelted metals than you can from the gems you get from prospecting. This is ture the vast amjority of the time no matter what level of ore you are dealing with.
2. Auction house deposit costs for gems are so big, we list gems in our Gold-making guide as trash items. You simply cannot make a profit buying gems for resale. Even if you are getting your gems from mining or prospecting, the deposit costs are going to kill your profit compared to the metals themselves.
3. The last resort to JC is selling cut gems, but the real money there is normally in the very rare BoP recipes that drop in Heroic dungeons and beyond. But if you can get a few Meta gem recipes and some others that are always in demand and cut those gems from other people’s mats you can do ok.
Try a little test and buy ore like you normally would for prospecting and then smelt half of it and prospect the rest. Track what you make from the metal and what you make from the gems. We venture a guess that the metals will sell faster and make more money after you take out the deposit costs for those big gems.
The one way around this is to use the new version of AADV which has a prospecting module. It will tell you whether you should resell, convert, or prospect all that ore. That will limit your exposure to loss in a big way.
196 - 215: Engraved Truesilver Ring x 35. (Mats required: 1 Truesilver Bar, 2 Gold Bar)
35 Truesilver Bars
70 Gold Bars
Jus learned this and it is Mithril Filigree instead of the gold bars to make the ring
Thanks cryophobia! We’ve just updated the guide.

huh, thats really useful, ill have to go through this cite more, ty Gavin
i tried the first one erlyer and i only got 29 JC points :/
I worked hard with my JC for the past 4 months. Every time I’d have a few hundred gold profit I would buy a recipe off the AH that I did not yet have. Now I can do every rare & meta cut in the game as of the current patch. It’s so nice because I can just keep the most profitable gems up on the AH, no matter what they are. There is a lot of competition on my server, but I don’t think anyone else has all the recipes, so I have the advantage with flexibility. There are enough miners competing on my server that there is always a good stock of underpriced adamantite which I buy up to prospect, sometimes 2k worth at a pop. It’s nice having a bag full of raw gems to cut & sell on the AH from friday to tuesday when demand is highest. Redently i figured out what to do with all that adamantite powder I’ve amassed. Make the cheapest blue jewelry I can that will produce large prismatic shards when DE’d! Most of the uncommon (green quality) gems go into having metas made. I’ve got 5 alchemists that I farm out mats to every week along with a tip for services so I can have a constant stream of metas coming in. Yes, I buy all my primals. But guess what, even if it costs 85g in mats and alchemist tips to have 1 meta gem made, I can still be guaranteed to make a 20g profit minimum on every one I put on the AH. There have been days where I’ve seen 3k gold come through my mailbox. But to get those kind of days it takes a hell of a lot of hard work…. First of all to get there, have the flexibility to sell many many different kind of gems. Then to have the buying power to be able to stock up on mats when the prices are low and sell back your cut gems when demand is high. Then when you have 40 ~ 80 auctions running on peak demand hours, constantly watch the AH for those that would undercut you (cancel & undercut right back until you can’t make a profit… not so painful if you do 12hr auctions and only have 1 or 2 of each gem type up), and keep replacing your auctions as they are sold. THAT my friends, is how you dominate your server with jewelcrafting.
tis is great info, can ou find otheres sch as leatherworking, blacksmithing, etc. Keep up the good work, I recomend your site to alot of peps. Tks. Aluvina(700 mage)
this is an awsome guide Gavin but could you do a guide for engineering and leatherworking also?
i’ve never tried this profession before, maybe i could give it a try now, thanks
Ok I’ve saved up 15k gold and the last 10k came pretty much from JCing. Sadly the more gold you have the easiest it is to make more of it
1) Buy about 600g-1ks worth of adamantite ore. I pay upto 28g a stack on my server.
2) Prospect.
3) Cut the rare gems into w/e sells for the most in the AH.If you dont have the designs yourself then find a JC who will do you cheap cuts for bulk.I pay 3g a rare cut.
4) whack the gems in the AH on 12 hour,1 gold cheaper than the others.
5) cut the green quality gems if u can be bothered. I usually just sell em in stacks for bout 20g each
now you will have a lot of Adamantite Powder. Buy/farm primal earths and Eternium bars. Make Mercurial Adamanite and then make lots of Braided Eternium chains.
6) Pay someone to D/E your chains and sell the Large Prismatics for a ‘usual’ price in your server via the AH coz it dont cost anything to put em in it. I usually make about 5g each shard doing this (based on cost of mats needed to make em)
Doing all of this takes about a hour and assuming most of your blue quality gems sell (which they should do if they are cheapest in AH) your looking at something like a 50%-75% profit return on whatever you spent on Adamantite ore!
The bit Vince says about cancelling your auctions if someone is selling cheaper is very true. Solid Elunes for example sell real quick but something like Bold Living Ruby prob only idk 10 or so are sold each day on my server…so if theres lots in the AH already then yours prob wont sell unless they the cheapest, so grab ya gems back and re-auction them.
umm, first of all i’m a 375 miner/jewelcrafter and prospecting adamantite ore has made me alot of profit, i think yesterday i went from having about 600g worth of gems to 1200 in a hour. I normally don’t like to buy adamantite ore on my server (cheapest stack i’ve seen is 29.99) granted some of these posts were put in before brilliant glass was introduced. The real money is making metas, on the server i’m on mats to make the diamonds roughly 125g, tip i usually toss in 25g and form the diamonds to sell for 210-220g a pop and i only get 10g taken from it so i’m making 60+ gold per meta i sell combine that with dailies and blue cut gems i get i’d say JC is definitely not a trash profession and you CAN make a ton of money from it. The only thing i wouldn’t mind doing when i get an influx of gold is to dump mining and powerlevel alch. so i can make my own diamonds
then i could make close to 100g per meta sold
One of my characters is a Jewelcrafter and (as you have suggested) a miner. Last night while doing the dailies I mined and amassed 60 adamantite and Fel Iron. From that I prospected 7 blue gems. Now in todays market that’s around 300+g, not including the green gems that can give me Brilliant Glass gems. All in all a good nights work. If I cut them then the value can rise to around 500g
Looking at the other posts thought - it appears that I am a slacker. Only 500g! I must improve, I must improve…..
Youch!
On my server, Mithril and Thorium are insanely expensive. Thorium goes from about 45-60g a stack, and Mithril goes for about 30g a stack. So, I’d recommend farming this instead of buying it. It’s a bit slower, but if you know the right spots to farm, you can save TONS of gold. I’ve gotten my warrior JC to 285 with spending minimal gold and asking around if people have any spare gems or ore laying around that they would be willing to part with. I’ve spent maybe 100-150g on my warrior’s JC, and its mostly because I HAD to buy Mithril because so many people were farming it. Of course if I would have waited about 2 weeks later Mithril went down to about 10g/stack, and people stopped farming it because it was more efficient to farm adamantite and other ore. Anyway, If you don’t have to have JC in a huge hurry, I’d recommend farming.
=]
i used this guide to lvl 225-300, i am dranei so got the +5 skill , i used list as my shopping list farmed the ores and then bought gems / prospect so i had enough materials. after i got to 300 i still had mats left, star ruby and thorium setting mainly, made 300g on what was left
